St. Martin de Porres School is a Regional Catholic School and as such is governed by a Board of Trustees who work in close collaboration with the Canonical Pastor of the School, the School’s President, and the Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Oakland.
Mr. James Briggs
Mr. Briggs is the Executive Director of the School of Applied Theology located in Oakland, CA. Prior to that he served as Executive to the President of Santa Clara University for fifteen years. Mr. Briggs is chair of the Board’s Finance Committee.
Dr. Washington Burns, MD
Dr. Burns is a leader in health care and for the last twenty years has served as the Executive Director of the Prescott-Joseph Center; a community center located in West Oakland, which provides a variety of services to the community including emergency services, asthma and health classes and a community arts program. Dr. Burns is the chair of the Building and Grounds Committee.
Mr. Richard Collyer
Mr. Collyer has over 25 years of corporate leadership experience with 12 years in senior management focusing on people development, strategy, planning and delivery of technology and business solutions for a global workforce. He most recently retired from Chevron, where he served as a senior manager with the Chevron Information Technology Company. He is a member of St. Bonaventure Parish and is now in his third year at the St. Francis De Sales School of Pastoral Ministry for the Oakland Diocese. Mr. Collyer serves on the Board’s Finance Committee.
Sister Barbara Dawson, RSCJ
Sister Barbara was the President of St. Martin de Porres School from 2004-2011. She has now been appointed Provincial of the Society of the Sacred Heart, US Province. Prior to serving as President of St. Martin de Porres, Sister Barbara was Director of Public Policy at Catholic Charities of the East Bay. Sister Barbara serves on the Board’s Development Committee.
Mr. Jaime Dominguez
Mr. Jaime Dominguez is the Headmaster of Stuart Hall for Boys in San Francisco. He serves on the national board of Teach for America as well as other organizations that support independent elementary education. Mr. Dominquez serves on the Board’s Academic Committee.
Ms. Frederica von Stade Gorman
Ms. von Stade Gorman is an ardent supporter of St. Martin de Porres School and a world-renowned opera singer and performer. She has a particular interest in ensuring that the children of St. Martin de Porres have the opportunity to experience and learn music. She is also involved in community organizations that connect children at risk with the arts. Ms. von Stade serves on the Development Committee of the Board.
Dr. Cynthia LeBlanc
Dr. LeBlanc has been a leader in the field of education for over 35 years. Throughout the state of California, she served as an educator, principal, central office administrator and superintendent. In addition to her career in public education, Dr. LeBlanc is deeply dedicated and active with the American Cancer Society and most recently served as Chair of its National Board of Directors. Her roots in education and service were born at St. Columba Parish in Oakland where she remains a parishioner and is a proud graduate of Catholic education. Dr. LeBlanc serves on the Board’s Governance Committee.
Father Aidan McAleenan (Canonical Pastor of the School)
Father Aidan is the Pastor of St. Columba Parish in North Oakland. He is the canonical pastor of the school, appointed by the Bishop. As the canonical pastor of a regional school, Fr. Aidan is the liaison between the West Oakland Deanery and the school administration. Fr. Aidan serves on the Executive Committee of the Board and the Development Committee.
Mr. Michael McAlpin
Mr. McAlpin is the Director of Media Relations for Saint Mary’s College. Prior to joining Saint Mary’s College, Mr. McAlpin had a distinguished career as a journalist and public television producer. For nearly a decade in Boston, he served as a writer and producer for the flagship PBS content provider, WGBH, creating programming for the series “Basic Black” — the longest running African-American public affairs show in the nation and as a producer for the Emmy-winning news program “Greater Boston". Mr. McAlpin serves as Chair of the Board’s Marketing Committee.
Fr. John McGarry, SJ
Fr. McGarry was the Provincial of the California Province of the Society of Jesus from 2005-2011. He is now the rector of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley. Fr. McGarry also brings extensive experience in Catholic education as an educator, administrator, and trustee for several Jesuit universities and highs Schools in the California Province. Fr. McGarry serves on the Board’s Development Committee.
Mr. Howard McCoy
Howard McCoy is a parishioner from St. Columba and a middle school History teacher at Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco. Howard has been an educator for most of his professional career and has extensive experience with middle school education and curriculum development. Mr. McCoy is Chair of the Board’s Academic Committee.
Dr. Carole Swain (Board Chair)
Dr. Carole Swain is the Vice-President for Mission at St. Mary’s College. She is the past head of the Department of Education for St. Mary’s College and a former faculty member at UC Berkeley. Dr. Swain is actively engaged in the LaSallian Mission at the National and International levels. Dr. Swain serves on the Executive Committee and the Board’s Governance Committee.
Ms. Kathrina Weekes
Ms. Weekes was the recent coordinator of St. Martin de Porres Middle School and is currently teaching at the Head-Royce School in Oakland. Ms. Weekes has a background in both education and technology. Ms. Weekes serves on the Board’s Academic Committee.
